AI Training

Mindrift Team

Every potential AI trainer completes an assessment within their domain before onboarding onto a project.. Think of it like an interview — a chance to show us your expertise and if you’re able to apply that to AI training tasks.

We recently chatted with Ivona, our Senior Vacancy Manager, to bring more clarity to our assessment process. We dove into why we ask contributors to complete these tests, what type of test you might get, and some of the top questions our support team gets.

Why do we require assessments?

Assessments at Mindrift cover three things. They help us:

  • Verify that contributors have the domain knowledge each project requires

  • Assess whether a contributor can apply that knowledge to AI training tasks

  • Ensure that the data we deliver to our clients meets the highest possible standards

Strong domain knowledge is essential to participate in specialized projects at Mindrift. Unlike general annotation or evaluation tasks, specialized projects are more complex and involve specific scenarios in your domain. An AI trainer for a coding project, for example, needs to be able to verify AI-generated Python code, write comprehensive tests that validate actual end-to-end behavior, and spot subtle bugs and logical errors — that requires real, in-depth knowledge.

And while expertise gets you through the door, what makes a great contributor is the ability to put that knowledge to work in a specific way. AI trainers need to break complex information down, structure it properly, and apply it to the kinds of tasks that shape how AI models learn. You might be a successful lawyer with decades of experience, but using that knowledge to train AI models is a completely different type of work.

Lastly, we need to ensure our clients get what they’re coming to us for — high-quality AI training data. “We provide expertly curated data to enterprise clients, which is used to train and improve AI models,” said Ivona.

“The quality of that data depends entirely on the expertise of the people producing it. Assessments are how we verify that contributors have the domain knowledge needed to do the work and how we ensure that our clients receive data they can trust.”

What assessments look like

Generally, our assessments come in three formats:

  • Multiple choice knowledge tests

  • Technical assessments

  • Interviews

The format is always tailored to the specific project’s requirements. For example, fields that require a high level of specialized knowledge, like STEM, will likely require a multiple choice test. Others, like coding, where practical skills are more important, will be directed to complete a coding assessment on platforms like HackerRank.

Some projects might require an AI interview, while high-level opportunities like Quality Assurance  roles might lead to an interview with a member of the Mindrift team. Regardless of the format, our assessments are always designed with the project goals in mind.

“We have dedicated teams responsible for designing and maintaining our assessments. Their goal is to create evaluations that accurately reflect the skills required for each project, not generic knowledge tests, but targeted checks for what will actually matter in the work. These assessments are reviewed and updated as project requirements evolve,” explained Ivona.

It’s important to note that assessments are unpaid. They’re part of the screening process, just like an interview or technical test for a traditional job, and serve to match the right candidate with the right project.

How to prepare and what to avoid

Just like a job interview, college exam, or speaking engagement, Mindrift’s assessments require a bit of preparation.

“Our assessments are designed to test genuine domain knowledge, so the best preparation is a solid refresher on your area of expertise,” said Ivona. “There are no shortcuts to replace that but a quick review of core concepts can make a real difference, especially for multiple choice formats.”

Another key thing to remember is that we want to see your genuine knowledge — not AI-generated answers. In fact, AI tools are strictly prohibited during testing because AI training relies on the real, experienced knowledge of humans working in these domains.

“The most important thing is to approach the assessment with integrity. Using unauthorized tools, copying answers, or switching tabs during a proctored test will result in a failed attempt — and in most cases, there are no second chances.”

In fact, those are the main reasons contributors fail their assessments. “The two most frequent causes are insufficient domain knowledge for the project requirements and attempts to game the assessment. Both are straightforward to avoid: prepare genuinely and take the test honestly,” explained Ivona.

FAQ: Results, retries, and dealing with issues

We get a lot of questions about assessments — and rightfully so. Contributors want to be prepared and know what to expect ahead of time. Here are the top questions our support team receives about assessments, answered.

Are assessments paid?

No, assessments are unpaid. They’re part of the screening process and don’t qualify as real tasks on Mindrift.

If a contributor fails an assessment, can they try again?

In general, we don’t offer second attempts. Assessments are one of the key signals we use to maintain quality standards and allowing retries would undermine that process. That said, exceptions have been made in rare cases where a contributor can demonstrate that a verified technical issue with the testing platform affected their result — not just a suspicion, but actual documented evidence of a problem on our end.

What's the most common reason people fail?

Insufficient domain knowledge for the project requirements and using AI tools, switching tabs, copying answers, or attempting to cheat in any way.

What should contributors do if a technical error occurs during an assessment?

If you experience a technical issue, contact our support team as soon as possible and provide documentation like screenshots, error messages, or any other evidence of what happened. If our technical team can verify the issue on our end, we can reset the assessment. We take these reports seriously, but we do require proof before taking action.

How long does it take to hear back after completing an assessment?

We aim to provide feedback within two business days of completing an assessment. In some cases, particularly during periods of high volume, it may take up to a week. If you haven't heard back after a week, we encourage you to reach out to our support team.

Does Mindrift provide detailed feedback after an assessment?

Contributors are always informed whether they have passed or failed but we can’t provide individualized feedback on specific answers or scores.

Are assessments used for AI training?

Assessments are never used to train AI models. This is a common misconception and simply not true. Any tests completed for Mindrift are solely used to assess a potential contributor’s skills and expertise for the project — not to collect data for AI training.

Be the mind behind the AI
