Are we entering an era where your career prospects depend on digital fluency skills and AI literacy?

Earlier this month, Shopify made headlines when CEO, Tobi Lutke, circulated an internal memo announcing the mandatory use of AI for all employees within the company. As the memo started to leak into the public media, Lutke released it to clarify his decision.

“Frankly, I don't think it's feasible to opt out of learning the skill of applying AI in your craft; you are welcome to try, but I want to be honest I cannot see this working out today, and definitely not tomorrow. Stagnation is almost certain, and stagnation is slow-motion failure,” Lutke writes.

And businesses are doing everything they can to avoid stagnation. Stanford University’s 2025 AI Index Report found that AI business usage has increased 23% since 2023, signifying that artificial intelligence is officially moving from buzzword to business backbone.

Jump in as we explore what an AI-driven workforce might look like — and the unique skills you'll need to stay ahead.

Digital becomes ubiquitous

In the future, every job will require some level of digital literacy or AI interaction — and that’s not an exaggeration.

Digital is becoming so ubiquitous that almost every industry is implementing cutting-edge technologies in their workflows. From GenAI to robotics to the Internet of Things (IoT), businesses around the world are quickly shifting to automation and AI-assisted productivity.

This shift isn't just about adopting new tools — it’s about reimagining how work gets done. Routine manual tasks are increasingly being automated, freeing up human workers for more strategic and creative roles.

In manufacturing, AI-powered robots are streamlining production lines; in finance, algorithms are crunching numbers and detecting fraud faster than any analyst could. Even in traditionally people-driven fields like customer service or healthcare, AI chatbots and diagnostic systems are becoming critical partners.

But with these changes come new challenges. As technology reshapes job requirements, the demand for upskilling and reskilling is at an all-time high. Workers need to not only understand how to use digital tools but also how to think critically about data, collaborate with AI systems, and adapt to rapidly shifting landscapes.

It’s not just the future of work that’s changing — it’s the nature of work itself.

What (jobs) the future holds

As technology continues to advance at breakneck speed, it's transforming existing roles and giving rise to entirely new ones. Fields like artificial intelligence, robotics, and big data are leading the charge, creating in demand positions that didn’t exist a decade ago.

The future of jobs report, 2025 (World Economic Forum)

According to the World Economic Forum, the fastest-growing job categories projected through 2030 are:

  • AI and Machine Learning Specialists

  • Big Data Analysts

  • FinTech Engineers

  • Software and Applications Developers

  • Security Management Specialists

  • Data Warehousing Specialists

This isn’t just about niche tech jobs either — these roles are spreading across sectors, from healthcare to manufacturing to education.

LinkedIn’s 2025 Work Change Report notes that Artificial Intelligence Engineer is now one of the fastest-growing job titles, topping the list in the US, UK, and Netherlands. Meanwhile, leadership roles in AI are also quickly emerging. The number of companies with a designated Head of AI has tripled in the past five years and could double again in the next few.

While much of this transformation is already underway, the next 25 years could reshape the workforce in even more radical ways, making it more dynamic, inclusive, and purpose-driven than ever before. Picture AI-powered career coaches helping individuals map out personalized learning paths, or virtual reality onboarding programs that allow new hires to “walk through” global offices from their living rooms.

Human-AI collaboration will be second nature, with teams seamlessly blending technical systems and human creativity to solve complex problems. Flexible, hybrid work models might dominate, allowing people to work from anywhere while still staying deeply connected via immersive workspaces.

And as technology takes over more repetitive and dangerous tasks, people will increasingly focus on roles that require emotional intelligence, complex decision-making, and big-picture thinking. The jobs of the future may not all exist yet — but one thing is clear: the future workforce will be smarter, more agile, and more empowered than ever before.

Wanted: A unique blend of skills

What this means for the workforce is a dramatic shift not just in what people do, but how they prepare for the future. In the coming years, job security will begin to hinge on adaptability and a willingness to learn.

Employers, in turn, will need to rethink talent development strategies, investing more in training programs and creating pathways for employees to transition into these new tech-forward roles. While some jobs will inevitably become obsolete, many more will be born — positions focused on managing, training, and ethically guiding artificially intelligent systems.

And these unique jobs will require an entirely new set of skills—a trend that’s already making its way into hiring practices. Analytical thinking tops the list of core skills, with the majority of employers viewing it as indispensable by 2025. Resilience, flexibility, leadership, and the ability to influence socially are also rising fast in demand, highlighting the importance of hybrid skills that bridge the technical and the interpersonal.

Skills on the rise, 2025 - 2030, The future of jobs report, 2025 (World Economic Forum)

With nearly 40% of workers' current skillsets expected to become outdated by 2030, the urgency to reskill and upskill is growing. But this shift isn’t something to fear. In fact, it’s an opportunity to evolve.

Technology literacy, AI fluency, cybersecurity knowledge, and big data expertise are climbing the ranks, but so are creativity, curiosity, and a mindset of lifelong learning. The most successful professionals of the future will be those who can balance hard and soft skills and are open to constantly refreshing what they know. So, how do you prepare for this new era of work?

  • Become a lifelong learner: Whether it’s online courses, podcasts, or peer-led workshops, build learning into your weekly rhythm.

  • Upskill regularly: Don’t wait for your employer to offer training. Platforms like Coursera, edX, and LinkedIn Learning are filled with courses in AI, data analysis, and digital strategy.

  • Get into the AI ecosystem:  Even if you're not a developer, explore how AI intersects with your field. AI Training is a great way to use your current knowledge and skills in a new, technologically-forward way.

  • Build digital fluency: Understand the tools and platforms reshaping your industry, even if you’re not the one coding them.

  • Stay adaptable: Embrace change, learn to pivot, and see uncertainty as a space for growth rather than disruption.

  • Gather diverse experience: Seek out roles or projects across different industries or departments. A wide range of experience is becoming one of the most valuable traits in a tech-driven job market.

And always keep in mind: it’s the human edge — our ability to empathize, imagine, and adapt — that will remain irreplaceable. The workforce of tomorrow will thrive not because it resists change, but because it’s prepared to evolve with it.
