How will my work as an AI tutor help eliminate bias?

How will my work as an AI tutor help eliminate bias?

AI’s rapid adoption into key areas such as hiring, criminal justice and healthcare has sparked justifiable concerns around bias and fairness.

We know that human decision-making is often influenced by unconscious biases and AI systems can inherit and even amplify these biases if not properly guided. This is why the role of an AI tutor at Mindrift is critical. Mindrift’s rigorous screening process ensures that only the most skilled editors contribute to this essential task, shaping the future of AI for the better.

Reinforcement learning from human feedback

As AI continues to advance, it’s essential to ensure its development benefits society. Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) is the bedrock of this development. In the context of generative AI models, RLHF ensures that AI responses become more ethical and useful over time. It empowers AI models to learn and improve from human input, reinforcing ethical behaviour and fairness – and it’s at the heart of the work we do at Mindrift.

The primary goal of an AI tutor is to create high-quality, well-structured content – such as prompts, responses, and dialogues – that will be used to train AI models. While an AI tutor won’t be involved in the technical aspects of AI training, the data provided will be vital for technical specialists who will refine the models. Some AI tutors, known as expert annotators, also take on the responsibility of reviewing and validating content to ensure its accuracy and quality.

Creating an ethical framework

An AI tutor’s role is not just about content creation, it's about helping to shape the ethical framework within which AI operates. Their work is integral to the development of ethical AI systems.

AI tutors work on the frontline to ensure that AI models produce accurate, relevant and ethical responses. They are responsible for meticulously reviewing AI-generated content, identifying any potential biases and providing feedback for continuous learning. For example, they might evaluate text for examples of bias or inaccuracies and suggest corrections that ensure the AI's output is fair and unbiased.

At Mindrift, the content created undergoes rigorous scrutiny, with multiple layers of review by peers and editors. This collaborative effort makes sure that every piece of content we produce with the highest ethical standards – ultimately helping to eliminate bias from AI systems.

The three core principles

For an AI tutor, the work should be guided by three fundamental principles: helpfulness, harmlessness, and honesty (HHH). These principles are designed to ensure that AI models communicate effectively, ethically and without bias.

  • Helpfulness: AI should prioritise being helpful to users. Whether someone is seeking information on a specific topic, asking for advice, or engaging in a conversation, the AI should strive to be as helpful as possible. The task will be to create content that guides AI to meet these needs comprehensively and practically.

  • Honesty: AI must be honest, providing accurate and objective information. It should clearly distinguish between facts and opinions, especially on complex issues. An AI tutor creates multiple response examples that emphasise honesty, ensuring the AI manages requests accurately and impartially.

  • Harmlessness: AI should avoid personal biases, controversial opinions and dangerous content. Responses should be respectful, impartial, and free from harmful stereotypes. The work will help create content that models this behaviour, ensuring AI remains neutral and safe.

While an AI tutor may not be directly involved in the technical training of AI models, their expertise in creating content that aligns with these principles is critical. By continually providing content that refines AI responses, they play a pivotal role in eliminating bias.

The future of the AI tutor role

The role is likely to evolve, with an increasing focus on bias mitigation, ethical training and ensuring that AI systems uphold human values and adhere to legal standards. An AI tutor may find they’re increasingly tackling specialised tasks that address ethical and legal challenges within specific domains, making the work both impactful and intellectually stimulating.

Just as society operates under laws and regulations, AI must adhere to guidelines embodied in the HHH principles. By focusing on being helpful, honest and harmless, AI tutors create content that teaches AI to provide beneficial and unbiased information.

Being part of this process means contributing to the next big advancement in AI. Qualifying as an AI tutor is an opportunity to make a significant impact, helping to develop AI that is both ethical and fair. This work is not only rewarding but also essential to the positive evolution of AI.
