From finance to editing for AI: Anita’s transformation

Join Anita Mulrooney on her journey with Mindrift, where she explores the intersection of AI Writing & Editing with her diverse professional background and personal passions. Discover insights into her:

  • Career transition

  • Mindrift community experience

  • Lifestyle, schedule, and approach

What is your professional background and education?

I have a Bachelor of Arts in English and French Literature, plus two post-graduate university qualifications – one in Information Management and another in Commerce. I’m also a fully qualified company director and accredited facilitator.

I left my C-level role two years ago, after 30 years in financial services leading marketing, customer service, and operations divisions.

Why have you decided to try this experience?

I left financial services because I wanted to spend my time pursuing the things that I've always wanted to try.

In the last two years, I've expanded my abstract art practice and business, taught ethics in two primary schools one day a week, taken on three director roles on nonprofit boards, and now I'm exploring the wonderful world of AI.

What do you like the most about this role?

I’ve always loved reading and writing! And I especially love explaining complex concepts in simple language. So, AI writing and editing lets me do all of these things at once. (Explain it to me like I'm a 10-year-old is my favorite approach!)

I also love being able to learn about so many different topics every day. It’s fascinating to discover subjects I wouldn’t ordinarily encounter.

What was most unusual within your Mindrift journey compared to your professional experience?

Probably the most different (and wonderful) thing is being part of an international team. My teammates live in Australia, England, the USA, South Africa, Brazil, Serbia, and more.

This can make it tricky to find a time for team meetings, but getting to work with people from different cultural backgrounds is awesome!

How is editing for Mindrift different compared to your normal editing work?

There’s a much wider range of topics to edit – everything from Astronomy to Gastroenterology, Religion, Arts, Linguistics, Pediatrics, Computer Programming, Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, and more.

How do you find balance between your freelance work and personal life?

With multiple part-time gigs keeping me busy, I’ve learned to embrace flexibility in my schedule. At Mindrift, I can work from anywhere and craft my own timetable. This suits me perfectly! For instance, I often seize sunny days by relocating my workspace to my favorite beach cafe.

Are you active in Mindrift’s Discord community? If so, what do you usually use it for?

Yes. We use Discord to share information, ask questions, coordinate tasks, and brainstorming better approaches to our work. We even have a social channel on our team server, where both knowledge sharing and lighthearted banter are warmly welcomed.

How do you feel about your role in the development of Generative AI?

One of the things I love most about AI Writing and Editing is that we get to shape the future of AI.

One reason I entered this field was to find out more about Generative AI and gain a better understanding of its mechanics and potential. I love all kinds of technology, especially its capacity to simplify our lives, freeing up time to do more of the things we love. AI blows my mind!

Do you think Generative AI will play an important role in your future, and how do you feel about the role you’re playing in developing it?

Absolutely! And I’m happy to be part of it!

What would you say to a person who might be considering this role?

Do it! It’s so interesting and fun. What could be better than having a job where you set your own hours and decide where you work from? I've already recommended Mindrift to several of my friends.

We’d love to know more about you beyond work – how does Mindrift fit into your lifestyle?

My 19-year-old son and I live in our ‘tree-house’ in a gorgeous little village at the top of a mountain in the Australian bush. We’re only ten minutes away from the eighth largest city in Australia and our beautiful beaches, so we have the best of both worlds!

These days, I spend most of my time creating abstract paintings, jewelry, and greeting cards. I’m also actively involved in my community, have a busy social life, and love seeing live bands.

Mindrift suits my lifestyle perfectly, because it can just slot in whenever it suits me. Sometimes I do my AI editing late at night, and sometimes it’s over a morning coffee. I can even work at a cafe or anywhere there’s space for my laptop.
